Back to campus – how to get back into everyday eating after the summer break
From holiday eating to everyday routines
During the holidays, it's often easier to get by with a more relaxed eating schedule. There are fewer timetables, less stress, and fewer situations that require long periods of concentration. When everyday life returns, things often change. Long lectures, group projects, work shifts, and exercise all place different demands on your eating habits.
After the summer break, getting back into everyday routines around cooking and eating can feel surprisingly challenging. The good news is that even small changes can help you find your rhythm again. Before long, you may notice that your energy stays more consistent throughout the day, hunger no longer catches you off guard between meals, and you still have enough energy left for an evening workout. Start with the tips that feel easiest for you right now.
Start your day with breakfast
During the summer, the first meal of the day can easily drift later and later. As everyday life returns, it's worth gradually bringing your meal rhythm back too. For many people, breakfast is the first routine of the day. Starting your morning with a familiar habit – and giving your body the nourishment it needs after the night – often makes it easier for the rest of the day's meals to fall into place. Before you know it, the whole day starts to feel more structured.
Make everyday life easier with ready-made meals
You don't have to cook everything from scratch. Ready-made meals, student restaurants, and other quick meal options can be a great way to make everyday life easier when your schedule gets busy. When you spend less time and energy preparing food, you have more left for studying, exercise and recovery. A well-balanced ready-made meal is a much better option than skipping a meal altogether because of a busy day.
Rely on a few favourite recipes
Everyday eating becomes much easier when you don't have to decide what to cook every single day. Think of one or two simple meals that are quick to prepare and use ingredients you can easily find at your local grocery store. If you're looking for new ideas, look at the healthy recipes from the Finnish Heart Association. Even one new favorite recipe can make a busy week feel much more manageable.
Keep enjoying your summer favourites
Returning to everyday life doesn't mean leaving your favourite summer foods behind. In fact, keeping some familiar summer flavours in your meals can make the transition back to everyday routines feel much easier. Summer can still have a place on your plate in autumn. That might mean adding berries to your morning porridge, enjoying an ice cream after lunch now and then, or having an evening snack on the balcony while the weather is still warm.
