UniSport’s sustainability and responsibility plan has been published – this is how responsibility is reflected in our operations
UniSport’s updated plan is built around two core objectives:
- Socially and economically sustainable development
- Ecologically sustainable development
Under these themes, clear key development actions and concrete examples have been compiled to ensure that responsibility work remains transparent and easy to monitor.
"Responsibility is not a separate goal for us – it is part of everything we do”
UniSport’s responsibility work is built on concrete key development measures that guide day‑to‑day operations. Responsibility is already visible in our everyday activities.
Equality and Non‑Discrimination
UniSport centres have adopted safer space principles, which guide both customer interactions and staff practices. The website meets accessibility requirements, and services are offered in Finnish, Swedish and English. Gender-neutral changing rooms are available whenever the facilities allow, and accessibility assessments guide the development of our spaces.
Economically Sustainable Decisions
Purchasing decisions prioritize long‑lasting and serviceable equipment, and sustainability criteria are being integrated into every stage of the procurement process. Deliveries are consolidated to reduce emissions. As an employer, UniSport emphasises transparent salary communication, support for staff wellbeing, and the inclusion of responsibility themes in employee onboarding.

Employer practices highlight transparent salary communication, support for staff wellbeing, and staff participation in responsibility work from planning to implementation.
Ecological Solutions
The amount of mixed waste has been reduced by improving waste sorting and favouring paper receipts. Customers can borrow or rent sports equipment. During renovations, LED lighting and energy‑efficient solutions are implemented. Sauna opening hours have been shortened to reduce energy consumption, and water use is managed with shower timers.
We are, to our knowledge, the first sports centre in Finland to publish its carbon footprint, having calculated it for the first time in 2023. UniSport’s carbon footprint decreased from the previous year: in 2024 it was 650 t CO₂e, compared to 743 t CO₂e in 2023. Most of our emissions originate from purchased energy, particularly district heating and electricity. Read more about UniSport’s carbon footprint here.
Responsibility Work Continues
Responsibility is part of our everyday operations, and the plan will be updated as we make new measurable improvements.
