UniSport is building a low‑carbon future – a more precise calculation method supports impactful actions
In 2024, UniSport’s carbon footprint was 650 tCO₂e, compared to 743 tCO₂e the previous year. The decrease in emissions is mainly due to more precise calculation methods, such as conducting a dedicated travel mode survey and refining centre‑specific energy consumption data. The improved methodology gives UniSport a clearer picture of the climate impacts of its operations and supports correctly targeted emission reduction measures.
UniSport is believed to be the first sports centre in Finland to publish its carbon footprint and related reports openly. The calculation is based on international GHG Protocol and ISO standards and is carried out annually.
What have we already done?
In 2024, UniSport implemented several measures that reduced emissions and advanced sustainability in a comprehensive way:
- We prioritised paperless receipts
- Equipment maintenance was refined to extend product lifespans
- Customer and staff travel‑mode surveys were conducted for the first time
- Gender‑neutral changing rooms were introduced where facilities allowed
- Safer space principles were implemented in all centres
- The website was updated to meet accessibility requirements
In particular, emissions from mobility decreased as the new surveys revealed that customers use public transport significantly more than previously estimated.
The work continues – plans are evolving
Although much has already been achieved, sustainability work does not stop here. UniSport continues its efforts through four focus areas:
- Energy efficiency and reduced consumption
- Sustainable procurement and life‑cycle thinking for equipment
- Supporting sustainable mobility
- Developing the model for a carbon‑neutral sports centre
UniSport enhances its reporting and practices every year. Sustainability is part of everyday operations — and new actions are on the way.
