UniSport's carbon footprint has been calculated for the first time

UniSport’s carbon footprint has been assessed for the first time, with the result for 2023 estimated at approximately 743 tCO2e. To our knowledge, we are the first sports center operator in Finland to publicly carry out a carbon footprint calculation. This has allowed us to identify our most significant sources of emissions and to direct our efforts toward reducing the environmental impact of our operations.
Our carbon footprint was assessed as part of a Master's thesis titled Path to Carbon Neutrality: Carbon Footprint Report for UniSport. The results showed that the majority of emissions from our sports center operations come from energy consumption. As no comparable data is available from other Finnish gym chains, we are the first operator in the field in Finland to publicly calculate and report our carbon footprint. We aim to be pioneers in responsible practices in the sports center industry and to lead the way for others.
We are committed to reducing our emissions through the following actions:
- We will monitor our energy consumption and carbon footprint annually.
- We support the transition to a paperless environment, for example by implementing electronic receipts and a mobile application.
- We promote recycling in all our sports centers.
- We will explore opportunities to expand circular economy services in our operations, such as offering more rental clothing and equipment.
- We encourage both our customers and employees to make responsible choices at UniSport and in their everyday lives.
